Midjourney is a lab research project headed by founder and CEO, David Holz. This joint effort from a team of skilled developers, researchers and very patient community moderators harnesses AI technology that allows users to make images using words and a little imagination.
This start-up is all about expanding the imaginative superpowers of the human species. There are tons virtual spaces devoted to character creation, environments and even philosophy (if want to feel bad about existing).
To date, Midjourney has amassed nearly 1.5 million users worldwide and their user base is rapidly expanding as the technology becomes more popular among artists, designers and the curious public. This is largely thanks in part to social media and word-of-mouth. The community is run largely out of a Discord chat network, but there are plans to expand the service onto a next-gen web experience within the upcoming months. Each update of the the AI based network of advanced algorithms brings massive improvements to both image quality and visual “coherence”.
Midjourney allows new users to experience the power that is AI with approximately 25 free image generations, users are then presented with the option to subscribe to different tiers via credit card once their free image quota is exhausted. The plans are reasonable with options for a $10 and $30 tier, each offering unique configurations and resource access.
The community is a large part of the experience, there are tons of lively discussions across the Discord server. There are rooms to share favorites, rooms to discuss improving results and even a room to vote on future changes to the service.
For those that don’t know Midjourney and other AI image services like it are based primarily around scientific research like diffusion. With a lot of complex math, a little bit of code magic, and lot of compressed data in the “latent space”.
It’s easier to visualize than it is to read:
What makes Midjourney unique is it’s ability to apply a limitless aesthetic and composition to your pieces. This can be both a blessing and a curse, as it makes creating almost like walking through an endless maze. There are so many options it can be overwhelming at times. However, in that chaos lies hidden gems of expressive artwork that rivals anything you’ve ever seen. It’s something that needs to be experienced at least once to appreciate its endless possibility.
At it’s core, Midjourney is about creative expression and exploration, it enables users to do extraordinary things that they might not otherwise have the time or skill to achieve all on their own. This new art medium gives us insight into a future world where humans harness the power of artificial intelligence to augment their own intelligence. This research lab is fostering a lurid environment where a brain/computer idea exchange flows freely, and thoughts manifest into new ideas yet to be explored.
David Holz, the CEO, holds weekly conversations aptly titled, “Office Hours”, whereby users of the service are invited to discuss current events surrounding AI and other topics, such as upcoming improvements, philosophy and thoughts on the experience in feedback channels.
